Excellent post Gerry - you nailed many of the key themes.

Future networks will be implicit rather than explicit (i.e. no destination site). Twitter is leading the way, but still owns and controls the data and infrastrucutre.

It's all a riff on the meaning of 'open'.

There is 'open' as in 'door' - which is bad for privacy. Expect to see much more granular access privileges for UGC.

Then there is also 'open' as in 'compatible' - which is the key. People will assemble their networks and functionality to best suit their interests/needs. Making all the pieces compatible it the big challenge here.

Finally, as regards the business model, I think it will be some sort of usage-based system, where code and content continue to earn revenues regardless of the context in which they find themselves.
